Why we forget what we learn

Picture yourself taking a language course. For a few months you learned new words every week, built sentences, and felt pretty good about your progress. Then the course ended. Six months later, when you look at that same word list, most of it looks familiar, but the number of words you can honestly say you "know" is disappointingly small.

Or: you spent an entire night studying for an exam, scored 90 on it, and if someone asked you about the same material two weeks later you'd probably struggle. Or there's a book you read years ago, one you remember loving at the time, whose contents you can barely describe today.

If all of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. It isn't a failure on your part, it's completely normal brain behavior.

Forgetting is not a mistake, it's a design

Your brain is constantly bombarded with information: everything you see, every sound you hear, every sentence you read. If it tried to store all of that indefinitely, it would lose the ability to tell what matters from what doesn't. Forgetting is really your brain's way of saying, "You haven't needed this again, so I won't keep it a priority."

In the late nineteenth century, a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus tried to measure this through experiments on himself: he memorized lists of nonsense syllables, then tracked how much of them he could still recall over time. The resulting curve looks roughly like this: forgetting starts very fast right after learning, most of the information is already "fading" within the first day, and then the rate gradually slows down. In other words, you lose the most in the first hours and days, exactly when you're doing nothing about it.

Knowing this might feel discouraging. But it also hides good news: forgetting isn't random, it follows a predictable curve. And if something is predictable, you can build a strategy around it.

So if we can't prevent forgetting, what can we do?

The answer isn't "stop forgetting entirely," because that isn't possible. The answer is to know roughly when forgetting is about to happen and time your review to land right at that moment. We'll explain why this works, and how to put it into practice, on the next page.
